When and where is open studios?
Silicon Valley Open Studios first 3 weekends of May, 2007
During the first 3 weekends of May, you’ll see hundreds of bright yellow and black SVOS signs popping up on buildings, telephone poles, and kiosks. You can follow the signs and arrows to hidden art studios that you may have passed by every day. Over 300 artists, from Belmont to Palo Alto to South San Jose are opening their studios, or forming temporary small “guerrilla art fairs” for the public this year. Visitors can meet the artist, see their latest works, converse with them about their work, and purchase art directly from the art sites.Silicon Valley Open Studios began in 1985 by Liz Kraft and a small, select group of her artist friends. Over time, SVOS became a significant cultural event in Silicon Valley and is one of a number of Open Studios events in California and worldwide. Up to 8,000 art lovers and curiosity seekers pick up a free SVOS artists map guide from public art spaces and go treasure hunting for that special here-to-for unfound masterpiece or simply the interesting piece that looks just right.
The variety of artworks include handmade books, oil, acrylic, pastel, oil pastel and watercolor paintings, photography, printmaking, ceramics, calligraphy, collage, sculpture, fiber, glass, jewelry, mixed media, assemblages, drawings (graphite, ink, color pencil, etc.), and digital imaging among others.
